A prologue: the narrator (Cate Blanchett) explains the creation and distribution of the rings and the destruction and war the Master Ring has brought upon Middle-earth. After the war, the Ring is found by Gollum (Andy Serkis) and then Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm).
