Film Language Tag: Panavision (2.35:1)

The trade name for an anamorphic widescreen film lens system developed by Robert E. Gottschalk for the Panavision company in the 1950s. When first introduced, Panavision projector and camera lenses delivered sharper images than competing CinemaScope lenses and could be adjusted to deliver different aspect ratios, with 2.35:1 being the most common. Panavision-equipped productions surpassed CinemaScope by 1963 and by 197 Panavision lenses were used for the vast majority of widescreen productions. Kroon, R. W.
