Hidetora Ichimonji's Decree
Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai) abdicates the throne to his eldest son, Taro (Akira Terao), with the condition that he retains his formal title and privileges. He splits the three castles among his three sons, Taro, Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu), and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu). When Saburo criticizes the decision, Hidetora banishes him and the advisor, Tango (Masayuki Yui), who defends him.

Closing Sequence
When one of Jiro's foot soldiers brings Kurogane (Hisashi Igawa) Lady Sue's head, he accuses Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu) of acting as Lady Kaede's pawn. Lady Kaede (Mieko Harada) reveals her true intentions and Kurogane executes her. Enemy armies invade and Jiro dies. Still waiting for his sister, Lady Sue's, return, the blind Tsurumaru (Takeshi Nomura/"Mansai Nomura") drops her buddhist text off a cliff.
