Film Language Tag: puppet
A moveable figure generally representing a living creature. Puppets may be realistic or fantastic; full sized, over sized, or miniature; filmed live or in stop-motion; controlled by a single operator or by a coordinated team; etc. Puppets come in many forms, including:
-Traditional “hand in a sock,” (Shari Lewis’ Lamb Chop), often with rods controlling the limbs (Jim Henson's Kermit the Frog).
-Marionettes controlled by overhead wires (Thunderbirds, 1964-1966).
-Stop-motion posable figures (Jason and the Argonauts, 1963), often with replacement heads for each facial expression (Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, 1993).
-An actor wearing a puppet suit, portions of which are controlled by puppeteers (the werewolves in Underworld, 2003).
Animatronic creatures controlled remotely (E.T. in E. T. the Extra- Terrestrial (1982), Chucky in Child's Play (1988), the sick triceratops and most close-up dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (1993), the beached whales in Whale Rider (2002), etc.).
