Film Language Tag: musical theme

Clearly defined melodies that are "developed" (or altered and commented on) in a composition; for short musical themes, the terms 'theme' and 'motive' are essentially interchangeable. In film, a musical theme functions like the literary motif, a significant recurring sound element. [See also leitmotif and sound motif]. At Kinolab, we use the musical theme to refer to a larger piece of recurrent music within the film’s score or soundtrack. For a shorter piece of recurring sound (that is not always musical nature), see sound motif. For a shorter piece that is associated with a specific character, object, or idea, see leitmotif(sound).
